Water is essential for all life forms It is a fundamental resource necessary for socio-economic development and for ecological sustainability. Good quality water is becoming scarce due to population growth and associated residential and industrial development and pollution, particularly in towns and cities. It is timely that the sustainable management of water resources is widely discussed, noting that water can be recycled for an unlimited number of times after adequate treatment. The conference will have topics regarding small systems (decentralised systems) which serves less than 100,000 population equivalent. The conference will discuss and explore new and innovative methods of treatment, better understanding and assessment of resources and their supporting ecosystems, proper management for conservation and approaches to achieve the dual aim of economic development and ecological sustainability. The focus is on the necessary infrastructure to provide good quality water, in sufficient quantity, in the most sustainable manner.

Sustainable solutions for emerging economies To achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal 6 of ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, will require a massive effort by the water and sanitation practitioners, especially those in low and middle income countries. We are beyond a simple model of expanded investment in infrastructure, there are numerous challenges and they are linked in often complex ways. For example, progress in the sector is significantly hampered by an overall shortage of appropriately skilled people in the workforce. IWA has published a preliminary analysis from 15 countries in 2014. Developing and emerging economies have made efforts to cope with the challenges, training, establishing competency frameworks, organizational development and implementing institutional frameworks. This is only one issue for which the fifth Water and Development Congress & Exhibition in Colombo, SriLanka creates an opportunity to share, mutually reinforce and accelerate work in progress.

The conference aims to integrate young people who are doing a research or work in the water and wastewater sector. It will enable them to exchange views and present their research, interests and work results. Conference Participants will have a unique opportunity to establish contacts with other research facilities or centers and with companies cooperating with the industry.

Following four successful IWA Specialized International Conferences on ‘Ecotechnologies for Wastewater Treatment (ecoSTP)’ in Spain (2012), Italy (2014), the United Kingdom (2016), and London, Ontario, Canada (2018), we are pleased to announce the 5th ecoSTP conference (IWA ecoSTP2020) to be held in Milan (Italy).   High anthropic pressure is impairing water, impacting the environment and limiting its potential uses, so innovation is the key for a new paradigm in wastewater treatment and management, as for: a) energy and resource recovery, favouring a new water economy. b) potential for multiple-use and reuse of the water resource, such as improvement of recreational surface water uses, promotion of indirect potable reuse, requalification of agricultural reserves, revitalization of waterways reconnecting people. The conference will feature plenary and parallel sessions, as well as workshops and short courses for students, postdocs and interested researchers.   The conference is organized by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Politecnico di Milano and will be supported by Water Utilities, Companies in the Water Sector, Local Authorities and other stakeholders.
